30 Coping Skills – How To Manage Stress Effectively (Continued)

Table of Contents

16) Perform random acts of kindness

Even in times when you’re not feeling nice, small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Just holding the door for someone or smiling at a stranger passing by can lighten your mood.

It’s easy to lash out in times of stress. But it’s important to have a heart of gratitude and pass it on to the next person.

17) Write a letter

It can be something simple – like words of encouragement to a friend or even reconnecting with an old friend. Have fun with it! Maybe decorate the letter if you’re good at illustrations, and think of a thoughtful message you know they will like.

18) Get coffee with a friend

Find someone who you can rely on being a safe space to share your thoughts. Maybe introduce them to your favorite coffee shop and chill together. Positive words and a friendly person on the other end of the conversation help profoundly with your stress level.

19) Solve a puzzle

If you want to focus on something for a short period, try solving a puzzle. Choose an easy one to start with so that you don’t aggravate your stress by not being able to solve it.

Seeing the pieces come together to make one piece of art is amazing. The point is to feel that sense of accomplishment when you complete a puzzle.

20) Rip paper 😈

Ripping paper into tiny pieces or pushing the bubbles on bubble wrap are safe ways to let your impulsive thoughts take over. These are alternatives to punching holes in walls or harming yourself.

21) Plan your dream future

Think optimistic. If you don’t like the present state, then plan for a better future. Whether it’s something you’ve always had on your wish list or something you’ve always wanted to change about yourself, start thinking about ways to change now. What would your dream life look like? What do you want to become?

22) Go for a drive

Manage stress by going on night drives.

Night drives when you feel like you need to take a break from life are honestly the best. Maybe it’s the calm vibes and the pretty night light out on the city that does the magic.

  • Some of my favorite songs to play during night drives are: “Night Changes” by One Direction, “Higher Power” by Coldplay, and “Superheroes” by The Script

23) Get up and stretch

Do some yoga to stretch out your body. Stretching every day is good for your muscle health. Standing up for a few minutes and stretching your arms and back can serve as alternatives to relieving stress if you don’t feel like stretching your full body.

24) Discover a new hobby

Hobbies are anything you love to do! If you’re still looking for one, I’ve known some people who take on drawing, baking, crocheting, etc.

It’s important to find something where you can get in the zone, so focused and immersed in performing some activity that you lose track of time and forget the stress.

The last time I was in this state of intense focus was when I was working on composing my own music. As an avid musician and singer, I was practicing with my band and writing up some possible songs, and before I realized the day was almost over.

25) Go to a museum

If you are the type of person who appreciates beauty, visit a museum and enjoy some art. Take your time to investigate each piece of art and admire the colors and the details. Surrounding yourself with other art lovers in the calm environment of the museum can be a good refresher.

Take some cute pictures while you’re there too 😉

26) Watch a funny TV or movie

When I’m upset and need to laugh it off, I always stick with watching a funny TV or movie. Some shows that have gotten me through the stress are: The Big Bang Theory, The Office, and Modern Family (starting to watch Friends now!)

27) Spend time with someone you love

The title says it all. Connecting with your loved ones and feeling safe in trusting relationships is important. This allows us to derive purpose and meaning from being a part of something, so spend more time with those you gain joy from.

28) Make a gratitude list

Happiness can be intentionally created by allowing yourself to experience the gratitude that you feel around you. What are you grateful for? Start making a list with 3 things. If you can think of more, write 6! And keep building your list.

29) Read an inspirational quote

Reading quotes that inspire you is also a way to feel motivated to take action. It could also provide a new perspective on how others combat stress and get back on their feet.

30) Write your strengths

This builds on the journaling idea from part 1. Write a list of your strengths and explain why you think these are your strong points. Validating yourself can feel good and help you build confidence.

Phew, now that was a long list. These are just some easy and common things I have tried without going out of my way or paying money to cope with stress.
